Natacha Mercier - Nuits Blanches

The portraits presented here, "White Nights", offer a particular modulation. The night workers captured by the camera, an equal number of men and women, are portrayed alone, as individuals. Their non-heroic poses emphasise their inner selves.

Subtly reworked by computer, these photographs appear to be paintings. The artist, who has meticulously weighed them, uses the technique of chiaroscuro in the great tradition of this pictorial genre. His constant concern was to place living, respectable, embodied bodies in the frame, involved in their task but also concerned with themselves, avoiding idealisation.
