On many transport networks, metro cars are coupled to offer sufficient capacity, especially during peak time. Whenever possible, the uncoupling of metro cars at specific times or on specific days can bring significant energy savings. That stems from the operation of fewer vehicles, thus reducing traction energy. This is only possible for older networks, as new metro systems are often composed of a single train allowing passengers to walk through the different cars.

The following steps must be taken when implementing the project:

• Investigate the passenger load during off-peak hours and weekends
• Organise meetings with all departments involved in the operations planning process
• Estimate the staff needs required for the additional shunting operations
• Adapt the timetables and vehicle operation planning
• Monitor the energy consumption before and after implementation of the action.
