Refurbishment of bus stops and terminuses at Simonis

On the way to achieving 100% electrification of STIB-MIVB bus lines

To improve air quality, reduce noise pollution and meet the Region's environmental objectives, 100% of the STIB-MIVB bus fleet will be electrified by 2035. The process of replacing vehicles and equipping lines has already begun.

A new electric bus terminus at Simonis

By 2025, line 87 will be partially equipped with electric articulated buses, which will need to charge their batteries on our network. The installation of a recharging zone near Simonis is therefore essential.

The placing of these charging infrastructures will go hand in hand with a refurbishment of the area around the charging zones, in cooperation with the other projects being developed in the area (Urban Renewal Contract, cycle highways, etc.).

The project includes:

  1. A 4-space bus parking lane on the right-hand side of Boulevard Léopold II/Leopold II laan (in the direction of the city centre), 3 of which will be used exclusively as a charging area for electric buses. This lane will be dedicated solely to charging the bus batteries or waiting for a charging area to become available; the buses will not embark or disembark passengers.
  2. The redevelopment of the bus stops around their current locations, with wider pavements and easier connections between the 87 and other STIB-MIVB and De Lijn buses through a safer pedestrian route. Crossing the boulevard, in particular, will be made safer by the construction of traffic islands to reduce passengers' proximity to car traffic
  3. The rearrangement of the traffic lanes on Boulevard Leopold II/ Leopold II laan around the charging areas, with clearer road markings and safer crossing of the boulevard for pedestrians and cyclists by creating traffic islands.
