Tram 15 Gare du Nord/Noordstation-Belgica

A new tram line and renovated public space

Brussels Mobility has applied for a building permit for the construction of a new tram line to connect Gare du Nord/Noordstation with Belgica.

The project

Brussels Mobility has applied for a building permit to create a new tram line connecting Gare du Nord/Noordstation with Belgica.

This new tram line, which will be given the number 15, will connect Gare du Nord/Noordstation to the metro station Belgica passing through rue des Charbonniers/Koolbrandersstraat, part of rue du Progrès/Vooruitgangstraat, Boulevard Simon Bolivar/Simon Bolivarlaan, the new pont Suzan Daniel/Suzan Danielbrug reserved for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport, rue Picard/Picardstraat, part of rue Vanderstichelen/Vanderstichelenstraat, Boulevard Belgica/Belgicalaan, Place Philippe Werrie/Philippe Werrieplein, and part of Avenue Carton de Wiart/Carton de Wiartlaan. In addition, rue Auguste Hainaut/Auguste Hainautstraat, which borders Place Werrie/Werrieplein, will also be redeveloped.

Serving as a link between the west and the city centre, the project was co-developed by Brussels Mobility which expanded it into a thorough renovation of the roads and public spaces along the entire itinerary.

This façade-to-façade redesign aims to improve all mobility options while making the public space greener and more suited to the needs of the residents:

  • a high-performance, quality public transport service,
  • improved accessibility and increased safety for all users in public spaces,
  • redesign of surfaces to create an urban environment that addresses current challenges such as noise reduction, pollution, the urban heat island effect, and flood risks.

This new tram line is part of a larger, strategic regional project.  The first phase of the submitted building permit application concerns the connection of Belgica with Gare du Nord/Noordstation. In a second phase, the line will be extended to Gare Centrale/Centraal Station. In a third phase, currently under consideration, the new line 15 will serve the south-eastern neighbourhoods of Brussels, transforming it into a major, structuring axis for the public transport network.

A building permit was submitted in May 2024.
