Travel carefree around Brussels with your bank card

Contactless payment is an everyday thing now: in the supermarket, at the bakery, at festivals... and that means on public transport too! That way, you don’t have to carry paper tickets or your MOBIB card: your bank card is your ticket. Your journey is directly validated with your debit card, credit card, smartphone or smartwatch. This is perfect if you hardly ever use public transport in Brussels or for a day out in the city!

Travel contactless

Do you have a contactless bank card, a smartphone or a smartwatch? Then you can pay contactless in every STIB-MIVB metro station, tram or bus:

For one journey, you pay € 2.30 at the metro gates or when boarding the bus or tram.
Validate the same card or smart device at each connection. If you change vehicles within 60 minutes of the first validation, you can get on and off for free.
You pay a maximum of € 8.40 per day. This means that you will reach the daily limit after four journeys on the same day: each additional journey is then free of charge.

To make contactless payment possible, your bank temporarily puts the maximum daily rate (€ 8.40) on hold in your bank account. No worries: you'll only pay for the journeys you have made. The difference will be returned to your account at the latest 2 to 3 working days after your first validation.

On your STIB-MIVB account, you will find an overview of your journeys, connections and your daily limit. This overview is only available if you travel with your bank card. If you travel with your smartphone or smartwatch, you don’t have access to this overview.

Do you come across a ticket inspector? Show them the card or device you used to validate your journey. And don't worry, we don't have access to your bank details.

Tips

Validate your bank card or smart device

You can validate your bank card or smart device at a contactless payment validator:

In stations: validate on the screen of the validator.
In buses or trams: validate below the screen.

To pay contactless with your smartphone, you can use Samsung Wallet, Google Pay or Apple Pay. To validate with your smartwatch, you’ll need Garmin Pay or Fitbit Pay. You know you have successfully validated when you can see a green screen and hear a beep, just like when you validate with your MOBIB card.

When paying contactless, it is not possible to validate for multiple people. Only you can use your card or smart device to pay contactless.

Tip

Travel contactless from the airport

You just landed at Brussels Airport and you want to explore the city? Contactless payment is your go-to! When you leave the airport and head for the city centre, a special Airport2City fare applies: € 7,90. It's the same amount as with a MOBIB card.

The benefit? You don't need to buy a ticket in advance or queue at the vending machine! Just validate your bank card or smart device in the bus. The Airport2City fare will be applied automatically.

MOBIB, the most reliable travel companion

Do you travel daily or often by public transport? In that case, the MOBIB card is the perfect option for you. You can load it with season tickets and journeys.
