On 20 September 1976, Brussels inaugurated its first metro. Fifty years and almost 5 billion journeys later, it has become an essential part of your daily life.
To celebrate this half-century in style, join us throughout September for activities, exhibitions… and plenty of surprises!
Festivities programme: 14–20 September
From 14 to 20 September, the metro is switching to celebration mode! Throughout the week, activities and surprises will add an extra touch of fun to your journeys across the network.
And to round off the festivities in style, join us on Sunday 20 September for a very special Open Day at the Jacques Brel metro and bus depot. It’s also Car-Free Sunday, which means the entire STIB-MIVB network will be free to use that day!
MONDAY 14 SEPTEMBER
Dandoy mini speculoos giveaway

Special “metro” mini speculoos biscuits will be waiting for you at the station.
Spin the Wheel of Fortune

Put your metro knowledge to the test and walk away with a surprise.
TUESDAY 15 SEPTEMBER
Opera goes underground
12:00–13:00 · Metro station De Brouckère
La Monnaie takes over De Brouckère station with dancers and costumes for an unexpected experience.
WEDNESDAY 16 SEPTEMBER
Street art comes to the metro

Help create a live street art piece celebrating 50 years of the metro with artist xx.
THURSDAY 17 SEPTEMBER
Turn up the sound!

Come and enjoy an acoustic performance by the AkoeSTIB choir.
A piano on the metro
13:00–17:00 · metro lines 1 and 5
A pianist will hop aboard an M7 metro train and add a musical soundtrack to your journey.

STIB-MIVB Open Day
10:00–16:00 · Jacques Brel depot –Gare de l’Ouest/Weststation
To celebrate 50 years of the metro, the Jacques Brel depot – home to both buses and metro trains – is opening its doors for this special occasion. Go behind the scenes, uncover some of the secrets of our vehicles and meet the people whose jobs keep the network moving every day. Join us right next to Gare de l’Ouest/Weststation, from 10:00 to 16:00.

Collector Cards: 30 cards to collect
What if your next journey turned into a treasure hunt? Collect our 30 exclusive cards celebrating 50 years of metro history and discover the iconic vehicles, stations, works of art and fascinating stories.
The cards will be available free of charge at various stations throughout September.
