Mobility budget: what's in it for you?
More freedom as from 2027
Published on
Do you have a company car? As from 2027, your employer also has to offer you the mobility budget.
A nice opportunity to rethink your commutes, your housing costs... and your day-to-day life!
Please note : The changes are announced for 1 January 2027, but the government still needs to translate the specific implementation details into concrete legislation.
The mobility budget, what is it exactly?
Good news! As from 2027, you get a new option.
If your company offers you a company car, you can now also choose for a mobility budget. It is an amount that you can spend as you fit.
It covers several types of costs, such as season tickets for the metro, tram and bus, your taxi expenses or even your housing costs.
In other words, you choose how you want to commute, and you decide what matters most to you.
The mobility budget is a simple, flexible, and accessible tool. Whether you are a daily commuter, a busy parent, or a dynamic executive, it can be adapted to your needs. And most of all, it makes sustainable mobility more attractive.
1. Tax benefits
Are you using a part of the budget for pillar 2 (i.e.: public transport, housing, a bicycle)? You do not have to pay taxes or social contributions on these amounts.
Each euro spent on your commutes, or your housing is then free of tax and entirely for you
2. Flexible and ideal in Brussels
No more anxiety when you need to find a parking space nor stress caused by traffic.
With the mobility budget, you can for example combine:
- a STIB-MIVB season ticket or Brupass for your commutes
- a bicycle for the last kilometres
- shared mobility solutions (such as carsharing, taxis, kick scooters) when you need it
The result? A more flexible and cheaper mobility, which can be adapted every month.
The mobility budget consists of 3 pillars, that you can combine:
- Pillar 1: an eco-friendly company car, like an electric car
- Pillar 2: sustainable mobility (STIB-MIVB season tickets, a bicycle, carsharing...), or housing costs if you live less than 10 kilometres away from your workplace or if you work from home at least 60% of the time.
- Pillar 3: the balance that you did not use, paid in cash, after a special contribution of 38.07 %.
3. Applicable to your rent or loan
Do you live less than 10 kilometres away from your workplace? Or do you work from home at least 3 days a week? Your mobility budget can cover part of your rent or your loan.
A smart way to improve your quality of life while saving money.
4. Family-friendly
Your budget can also cover the STIB-MIVB season tickets of your household.
A fun little boost to help you move more freely as a family.
5. Eco-friendly
If you opt for sustainable mobility, you contribute to a more breathable and more pleasant city to live in.
It's good for you, and for Brussels!
What’s changing for you
As from 2027, if your company offers you a company car, it also must give you the choice to opt for a mobility budget.
In other words:
- your employer offers you the mobility budget
- you're free to choose if you want it (or not)
- you can combine it with an eco-friendlier car, or only use it for your transport and your housing costs
In short, you will have the right to choose, but you are still in charge of deciding.

How to start?
Discuss it with your HR department: find out more about the internal policy, because some conditions could be in effect, like the end of an ongoing leasing contract
- Simulate your budget: compare the value of your car to the one of the mobility budget
- Choose your priorities: housing, commutes, a bicycle... or a mix of everything!
- Take action: order your STIB-MIVB season ticket, buy a bicycle, move closer to your workplace
- Enjoy and adapt your choices: you can adjust your choices every month.
