Towards 100% emission-free buses
Hybrid power: a key transition
In 2018, we introduced the first hybrid buses to our network. Since then, we have been able to replace hundreds of old diesel buses while simultaneously investing in greener technology to prepare our network and infrastructure for electric vehicles. Our fleet now includes 164 articulated hybrid buses and 236 standard hybrid buses (2023 annual report figures).
Electric vehicles: the ultimate goal
Alongside hybrid buses, we have gradually incorporated 37 electric buses into our fleet, extensively testing them on the hilly streets of Brussels and gradually adapting to the new, complex technology of electric vehicles.
This way, we can now speed things up a notch: we have ordered an additional 70 articulated electric buses as well as 36 standard electric buses in 2023, to be delivered progressively from summer 2024 onwards. By 2035, all our buses will be fully electric, ensuring a complete transition to clean energy. Today, all trams and metros are already 100% powered by electricity.
New infrastructure in our depots
Electric buses need to be charged. To ensure their batteries are charged, we're adding charging stations both in the depots and on the network at the terminuses of the lines.
A new generation of trams
Did you know that the tram was the first means of public transport in Brussels? Long before the first buses or metros in the city, our ancestors were taking horse-drawn trams. Nowadays, more than 400 trams are operating on a network that covers 150 km (2023 annual report figures).
What started as a fleet of high-floor trams quickly developed into a fleet with various tram models.
- The first low-floor tram, the T2000, was introduced on the STIB-MIVB network in 1994.
- In 2006, the T3000 and T4000 were launched, immediately standing out with their elegant curves and Art Nouveau-inspired design.
- The Tram New Generation (TNG) made its first appearance on the network in 2023. By 2026, a total of 90 of these new trams will be introduced.

The metro of the future
Back in 1976, King Baudouin boarded the first ultra-modern, orange Brussels metro. According to the 2023 annual report, the metro has since become the favourite mode of transport for Brussels residents, with more than a third of all journeys made by metro.
Over the years, various models have been added to the 40 km network:
- The M6, also called the Boa, appeared on our network in 2008. At 94 meters long, it transports more passengers than any other metro.
- In 2011, a modernised version of the Boa, the M7, was introduced to our network. Thanks to the recent order of 43 additional M7 vehicles, you can now enjoy more frequent metro service.
STIB-MIVB transport services
Most trams, buses, and metros operate for an average of 20 hours a day. However, you can always rely on extra modes of transport with the following services:
- Noctis: Since 2007, on Fridays and Saturdays between midnight and 3.00 am, you can get home safely using 11 Noctis bus lines. These night buses take you from the city centre to the suburbs, making them convenient after a night shift or a night out in the heart of Brussels.
- Collecto: Want to keep the party going all night long? Collecto shared taxis offer a safe ride home every night from 11.00 pm to 6.00 am. This means you avoid driving when you’re tired or had a drink.
- TaxiBus: Since 1978, the specific transportation service TaxiBus has been paving the way for inclusive mobility. With 12 minibuses and the Brussels taxi service, we ensure on-demand transportation for people with reduced mobility.
