Rue Léopold I/Leopold I-straat
Complete overhaul
The Bus Master Plan, approved by the Brussels Regional Government on 21 March 2018, involves a complete overhaul of the Brussels bus network. The goal is to pave the way to tomorrow’s mobility by adding new bus lines, ensuring better connections, and increasing the capacity of existing lines.
To improve passenger comfort, line 53 is now operated by articulated buses, which offer more seats.
To ensure that these buses can operate in the best possible conditions, some improvements are needed in the rue Léopold I/Leopold I-straat.
From a wider perspective, the project is an opportunity to completely upgrade and redevelop the street, promoting a greener environment and the use of soft and shared mobility, while making all pedestrian walkways safer.
The building permit was issued in April 2024.
A greener, completely redesigned street
Following a test phase (see below) and a citizen participation process, the project involves a complete overhaul of the street between boulevard de Smet de Nayer/de Smet de Nayerlaan and rue Emile Delva/Emile Delvastraat. The scale and quality of the project have made it eligible for inclusion in the AVANTI regional programme, which aims to improve the regularity and reliability of STIB-MIVB vehicles.
In the first one-way section of the street, between boulevard de Smet de Naeyer/de Smet de Naeyerlaan and avenue Charles Woeste/Charles Woestelaan, the roadway will be widened slightly to dedicate the direction towards boulevard de Smet de Naeyer/de Smet de Naeyerlaan to a contra-flow bus lane + bicycles, while allowing safe crossings with all types of traffic. This bus lane will be shared with a suggested cycle lane.
On the rest of the two-way street, the roadway will also be widened to allow a smoother and safer flow of traffic. In each direction, a suggested cycle lane will be painted on the ground, and traffic on
rue Léopold I/Leopold I-straat will be given priority at all junctions, except for the one with avenue Charles Woeste/Charles Woestelaan.
The bus stops Woeste and Amélie Gomand will be completely redesigned and made fully compliant with all accessibility standards for people with reduced mobility and all users.
The pavements will be widened to make pedestrian traffic safer and more pleasant. Around schools, the Jette Dutch Cultural Centre and intersections, the plan aims to create safe pedestrian crossings. The area around the two schools, in particular, will be marked as “low-traffic zones”. (See visual below) And at the large intersection between rue Léopold I/Leopold I-straat, avenue Prudent Bols/Prudent Bolslaan and rue Emile Delva/Emile Delvastraat, pedestrian crossings will be made safer and shorter.
Everywhere, great care has been taken to green up the urban landscape. To this end, flowerbeds and trees will be planted along the pavements and many parking spaces will be made permeable.

Public transportation for everyone
The bus stops Woeste and Amélie Gomand will be completely redesigned and made fully compliant with all accessibility standards for people with reduced mobility and all users.
Test phase
In 2019, a first mobility test was carried out by the STIB-MIVB to improve the regularity and performance of the bus line 53.
What exactly did this test consist of?
- Line 53 operated by articulated buses.
- Eight crossing zones were created to enable the articulated buses to navigate easily in the rue Leopold I/Leopold I-straat. This required the removal of 34 parking spaces, but made it possible to widen the pavements around two schools and make the area safer for pedestrians and cyclists.
- Placement of 22 bicycle parking bays.
- Installation of speed bumps.
- New pedestrian crossings and bollards.
In 2020, another mobility test was carried out by the Jette municipality. A contraflow bus + bicycle lane was created. As a result,
- rue Léopold I/Leopold I-straat now has priority over perpendicular roads.
Only buses, taxis and bicycles are allowed to travel from avenue Charles Woeste/Charles Woestelaan to boulevard de Smet de Naeyer/de Smet de Nayerlaan.
