Why are we renovating Maelbeek/Maalbeek metro station?
Brussels Mobility and STIB-MIVB are refurbishing metro station Maelbeek/Maalbeek in 2025 in order for your journeys to be more comfortable and safer. The works are being combined to minimise disruption.
The most important changes
Two lifts are being renewed, the entrance at chaussée d’Etterbeek/Etterbeeksesteenweg is remodelled and the stone entrance at rue de la Loi/Wetstraat is being refurbished. With these modifications, the station will be more comfortable and more (easily) accessible.
More comfort in the station
The wall tiles in the entrances are being replaced, and the signage is being renewed. The vending machines and photobooth are moving to a new spot inside the station. This will create more space and provide clear orientation.
An improved memorial space
After the refurbishment, the station will also be better equipped to commemorate the attacks of 22 March 2016. Part of the works will be completed by March 2026, allowing visitors to enter the station undisturbed.

Improved accessibility
The station is being made more accessible, with new lifts, tactile paving, double railings, higher contrasts, and adapted routes for people with reduced mobility.
