Montgomery: redevelopment of the 39 and 44 tram terminus

Currently, PCC trams operate on lines 39 and 44. They are the oldest trams of the STIB-MIVB fleet. While they are an iconic part of Brussels' heritage, their levels of comfort, capacity and accessibility no longer meet today's expectations.
STIB-MIVB is taking advantage of the suspension of tram lines 39 and 44 due to track works on Tervurenlaan/avenue de Tervueren by starting the refurbishment of the Montgomery terminus on 3 October to prepare for the arrival of the T3000 trams on these lines.
These trams, which are introduced progressively on our network from the spring of 2027, are more comfortable, bigger and more accessible.
Lengthening of the platform
The platform is lengthened to make room for the T3000 trams. The platform is currently curved and too short, so it needs to be straightened and lengthened. The underground facilities also need to be modified as shown in the illustration below.
A limited impact of the works
Works at the Montgomery terminus and on the tracks along Tervurenlaan/avenue de Tervueren are being carried out simultaneously in order to minimise the disruption. This way travellers can sooner enjoy a more modern infrastructure and more comfortable trams.
The first step to a better terminus
These works quickly improve the comfort and accessibility of tram lines 39 and 44. In the long run, however, the Montgomery terminus needs to be refurbished completely to make it future proof. STIB-MIVB is currently studying various scenarios with all stakeholders and has appointed a consultancy firm to support this process.
Replacement of tram tracks on Tervurenlaan/Avenue de Tervueren
At the same time STIB-MIVB replaces the tram tracks between Woluwelaan/boulevard de Woluwe and Leopold II square/square Léopold II. These works involve the refurbishment of the road and the Julius Caesar/Jules César and Groene Hond/Chien Vert stops, so that the T3000 trams can also serve those stops.
These works are the next phase of the track renewal works on Tervurenlaan/avenue de Tervueren, the first part of which took place between 2023 and mid-2025.
Public transport
Tram lines 39 and 44 are suspended between Montgomery and Trammuseum/Musée du Tram. They are replaced by a T-bus that serves the stops on Tervurenlaan/avenue de Tervueren. Connections with trams to Ban-Eik and Tervuren are available at Trammuseum/Musée du Tram stop, which is temporarily serving as the terminus for tram lines 39 and 44.
For passengers travelling from Trammuseum/Musée du tram, the T-bus also provides a direct link to metro line 5 via its terminus at Merode.
