Works rue de la Régence/Regentschapsstraat and tram stops Petit Sablon/Kleine Zavel

Updating facilities for an improved and safer mobility

The tram tracks on rue de la Régence/Regentschapsstraat have reached their limit and are due to be replaced. This is part of an ongoing upgrade of the public transport network to provide an ever more reliable and efficient service. The new equipment will also help reduce the vibrations generated by passing trams, thereby improving passenger comfort. The project will cover the entire length of rue de la Régence/Regentschapsstraat, between place Poelaert/Poelaertplein and place Royale/Koningsplein.

Petit Sablon/Kleine Zavel stops

All-new Petit Sablon/Kleine Zavel stops for greater passenger safety and comfort

The total redevelopment of the stops serves three purposes: to improve passenger safety and comfort, and ensure access to trams for people with reduced mobility. Currently, passengers have to cross a traffic lane when getting off the tram. Despite the fact that drivers are not allowed to overtake a stationary tram, this creates significant risks for passengers. The new platforms will be raised and accessible directly from the trams. This will mean no more dangerous crossings, while ensuring access for people with reduced mobility and pushchairs. Cyclists will also benefit from a safer experience thanks to the installation of an off-road cycle lane behind the stops.

A project in tune with the neighbourhood's heritage

The iconic historical setting of rue de la Régence/Regentschapsstraat deserved special attention. The project has been designed to blend harmoniously with the area's heritage. The chosen materials, such as blue stone paving slabs and granite stones, echo the area's visual identity, while meeting modern standards of quality and durability.

Accessibility maintained during the works

The works have been scheduled with two priorities in mind:

  • Limiting the disruption to local residents and users: the works will be carried out in several sections, from place Poelaert/Poelaertplein to place Royale/Koningsplein.
  • Ensuring continued easy access to the Grand Sablon/Grote Zavel:  Traffic (in one or both directions) will be maintained at all times in rue de la Régence/Regentschapsstraat. The street will be open for the Brussels 20km and the National Day celebrations.

You can find all the traffic plans in 'Downloads' (only in french and dutch).
