STIB is a public corporation, entrusted by the Brussels-Capital Region with the operation of public transport on its territory.
Every five years, the public service contract sets out the missions and commitments of STIB and the Brussels-Capital Region, with the aim of developing mobility in Brussels. The Board of Directors is entrusted with monitoring proper execution of the contract. A corporate plan defines STIB's mission and vision as well as the implemented strategy in order to achieve the targets set out by the public service contract.

STIB carries out its mission as a public transport operator by endeavouring to respect a set of principles grouped under the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). CSR is a way of working, a strategy and projects which, based on the company’s values and the expectations of its stakeholders, make it responsible for its choices.

As a public transport operator, STIB contributes to improving the environment and quality of life in Brussels through sustainable and safe mobility.
It holds regular dialogue with its stakeholders (customers, employees, associations, residents, Brussels public sector organisations, etc.) in order to satisfy their requirements and expectations.

Dialogue with the stakeholders
As a public transport operator, STIB influences the society in which it evolves. Conversely, the company is also impacted by the various society actors: customers, workers, suppliers, authorities, trade unions, local communities, associations, etc. Whether they are internal or external to STIB-MIVB, these actors are stakeholders of the company.
This partnership with the stakeholders forms an integral part of the Corporate Social Responsibility policy (CSR), but also forms a solid axis of the strategy since it helps to identify the risks and opportunities on the one hand and to reinforce the company's credibility on the other hand.
STIB already opens many dialogues with its internal and external stakeholders, but the operator remains aware of its limitations and improvement efforts.
The Social Media Team of STIB-MIVB makes every effort to open dialogue with the travellers and to answer their questions the best possible way through various social networks – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn or even Pinterest.
Through what the customer communicates via a letter, an e-mail, a phone call or even via social networks, the Customer Care staff aims to give an adequate answer, whether it is about providing exhaustive information within a proactive logic ou ensuring a personalised follow-up for the customer.
STIB-MIVB works in conjunction with the PRM section of the Commission Régionale de Mobilité so as to improve the access to the network. Moreover, within STIB-MIVB, a person of contact is specially designated to secure a continuous dialogue with the associative sector.
Even though the operator puts the customer at the heart of its efforts, STIB-MIVB nevertheless also intends to take into account the inhabitants' expectations. For the work sites of STIB-MIVB a person of contact is specially designated to make sure the inhabitants are informed and their remarks are gathered.
For large scale projects STIB-MIVB does not hesitate to organise temporary exhibitions to fully inform the inhabitants.
Actors of the city
STIB-MIVB helps the event planners with the implementation of mobility plans, which promote among others the use of public transport, by:
- offering extra metro, tram or bus services,
- organising indication or promotion actions regarding the accessibility by public transport,
- implementing a network (Couleur Café, Museum Night Fever, etc.),
- the ticketing.
Although the main mission of STIB-MIVB is to secure its role as a transport operator, the company is often confronted to society issues.
In this field, its policy is to work with competent partners who guarantee a professional assistance.
Prevention work implies regular contacts with the travellers and, as such, with pupils and students. For many years now, STIB-MIVB has been working intensely to raise the awareness of the schools. In addition to specific actions, STIB-MIVB has developed the Responsible Young Passengers (RYP).
STIB-MIVB is committed to establish a solid relationship based on encounters and dialogue with the main actors in the field of technical education of secondary and superior level. The key issue of this approach is simply to inform the young public of all the career opportunities STIB-MIVB has to offer.
The company welcomes students for company visits and immersion internships. With the arrival of hybrid and electric buses, maintenance-related jobs are changing and becoming more complex. Such positions require specific technical profiles. In mid-2017, the “Class of electromechanical maintenance agents” project was set up by STIB in partnership with the Cardinal Mercier Institute for Social Advancement. Its objective was to train electromechanical maintenance agents, in a year. It did this by creating a predominantly female class of around 12 adult social advancement students with the possibility that graduates would be hired by STIB.
However, the operator is also present in the schools, colleges and universities of the Brussels-Capital Region for information sessions. Inversely, guided tours of the workshops and presentations of the important projects are organised.
Partners for employment
In order to address future challenges in terms of mobility, STIB-MIVB is constantly looking for new employees.
For many years now, STIB-MIVB and Actiris, the Brussels Employment Office, have been active partners for the job creation for the inhabitants of Brussels.
As provided by law, the social dialogue within the company takes place during the work council (Conseil d'Entreprise) and the Committee for prevention and protection at work (Comité pour la Prévention et la Protection au Travail - CPPT), but also during various other committees with specific tasks.
The Comité paritaire de sécurité (CPS) was founded in 2010. It is entrusted with the questions regarding security. During ordinary meetings, the committee discusses general issues concerning assault prevention. In case of severe assault, the committee holds an emergency meeting in order to take the best decisions to raise the awareness of the general public.
The Comité de masse, a subcommittee of the CPPT, treats every issue regarding the work clothes and the uniforms. This committee discusses questions about cleaning, provides its opinion on new purchases, watches over the quality... It meets every two months.
The Comité chaleur is composed of 7 membres of the CPPT and treats all measures linked to the weather conditions, such as the distribution of soup (winter) or fresh beverages (summer) to the outside workers.
The Conseil de recours gathers when an employee dealing with redundancy contests the reasons or conditions.
STIB-MIVB and the Brussels-Capital Region organise "Progress events" within the framework of the management contract binding both entities. The main goal is to advance the participants' knowledge on a specific matter of the management contract, allowing them to benefit from the experience and the best practices applied in other regions and countries and to confront them to the concerns of the public transport authorities in Brussels.
