Time for a new MOBIB card?
Both personal and basic MOBIB cards are valid for a period of 5 years. An expired card cannot be reloaded. Don’t worry, as long as there is a valid ticket or season ticket on your card, you can continue to travel freely
If you have a personal MOBIB card that’s no longer valid, you can renew it online or in a sales outlet at the price of €6. All the valid tickets that remained on your previous card will automatically be transferred to your new one Use up all valid tickets on your anonymous MOBIB basic and then buy a new one at a vending machine or a sales outlet.

Is your MOBIB card about to expire?
Do you have a personal MOBIB card?
2 months before the expiry date of your card, you can transfer all your tickets on a new card. You have 2 options:
- As long as your card is still valid, you can request a new one on our website.
- In a BOOTIK or KIOSK, you can buy a new MOBIB card at any time.
Do you have a MOBIB basic card?
A MOBIB basic is anonymous, so you can’t transfer its contents. Use up all your tickets first and then buy a new card on a red GO vending machine of in a sales outlet.
How can I know when my card expires?
If your personal MOBIB card was issued after April 2018, you will find the expiry date on the front. However, the validity date is not indicated on MOBIB basic cards. Scan your card on a vending machine or drop by one our sales outlets to know when your card expires.
Our vending machines will display a message if you try to buy a ticket with an expired card.
Travel without worries
The estimated life span of a MOBIB card is 5 years. After that period, we found that MOBIB cards have too many technical issues. Because we want you to travel as carefree as possible, you card has an expiry date. This way, you won't unexpectedly end up with a card that doesn't work.
A new MOBIB card costs €6. The 5-year validity period is a joint measure of STIB-MIVB, SNCB-NMBS, TEC and De Lijn. Does your card stop working during these 5 years? Then you will receive a new card for free in a BOOTIK or KIOSK sales outlet.

Why is my card only valid for 5 years?
This 5 year validity period has been set by a joint decision of the 4 public transport operators (STIB-MIVB, De Lijn, SNCB-NMBS and TEC). When reaching 5 years, the cards start to show signs of weakness or even technical issues. By replacing your card, you will be able to enjoy your journeyx without having to worry about a malfunctioning card.
How can I renew my personal MOBIB card?
Everything depends on the moment you choose to renew your card:
- If you renew your card before the end of its validity period:
- You can renew your card on our online purchase platform
- You can immediately renew your card in one of our sales outlets BOOTIK or KIOSK
- If you renew your card after the end of its validity period:
- You can only renew your card in one of our sales outlets BOOTIK or KIOSK
How can I renew my MOBIB basic card?
Simply purchase a new card in one of our sales outlets BOOTIK or KIOSK or on one of our red GO vending machines.
Do not forget to use all the remaining valid tickets on your old card before purchasing a new one and destroying the old card.
Why can’t I purchase a MOBIB basic card on your website?
Because the MOBIB basic card has been conceived to be an anonymous card. However, purchasing a card online and shipping it to your home requires your personal data such as your name, first name, home address, etc.
Will the transport tickets currently used on my personal MOBIB card be transferred on my new card?
Yes, the currently used tickets will be transferred on your new card.
How can I know my card’s validity?
There are several ways to find this information:
- You can find the expiry date above your identity photo on a personal MOBIB card if the card has been issued in 2018 and later.
- You can also read your personal MOBIB card or your MOBIB basic card on a GO vending machine.
- In one of our sales outlets KIOSK or BOOTIK. Our colleagues will be able to give you the information whether you use a personal MOBIB card or a MOBIB basic
Will I still be able to travel if I do not renew my card after the validity period has expired?
If you do not renew your personal MOBIB card or your MOBIB basic card and that all the tickets loaded in this card have been used, you will not be able to load new transport tickets.
What should I do with my old MOBIB card once I have received the new one?
If you renew your card in one of our sales outlets BOOTIK or KIOSK, our colleagues will take your old card back.
If you renew your card on our online purchase platform or on one of our GO vending machines, simply cut your card in small strips in order to render it useless and throw them away.
Why do I have to renew my functioning card?
When reaching 5 years, the cards start to show signs of weakness or even technical issues. This is why you need to replace your card with a new one for 6 Euro. By replacing your card, you will be able to enjoy your journeys without having to worry about a malfunctioning card.
Why is the replacement not free of charge?
The initial purchasing price of the card includes a usage right period of 5 years. The price of 6 Euro includes the purchase, the personalisation and the shipping of your MOBIB card. In case the card does not work correctly, it will be replaced for free during the first 5 years.
Can I still use my MOBIB card if the validity period has expired?
As long as you still have valid tickets on your card, you can continue to travel with card even if it has expired. However, once the validity date has expired, you can no longer load new tickets.
Other mobility operators
I also use De Lijn, SNCB-NMBS or TEC tickets on my personal MOBIB card. Will these also be transferred to my new card?
After renewing your card online or in one of our sales outlets, follow the next steps to transfer your season tickets:
- De Lijn: go to a Lijnwinkel store
- SNCB-NMBS: scan your card on a SNCB-NMBS vending machine
- TEC: validate your card in a bus or scan it on a TEC vending machine.
I have a Villo!, Interparking or Cambio season ticket on my MOBIB card. Will it be transferred to my new card?
