STIB/MIVB is launching a new campaign to remind travellers that they must always have a valid transport ticket when travelling with STIB/MIVB. There are several reasons why we bring this to the attention of the travellers.

You have to validate!
You travel by tram, bus or metro? In that case, you always have to be carrying a valid transport ticket and validate it. So scan your card each time you board a vehicle or enter a metro station, even if you are connecting. The contactless 1 day ticket and Jump 24h, 48h, 72h also have to be validated on board of each vehicle and in every station. Moreover, keep your transport ticket with you because you often need it to exit the station. If you don't validate, you will be in violation.
Why do you have to validate?
- Because we can only increase the frequency if we know the number of travellers
Should more metros be used during peak hours? Should an extra bus be added on a particular line? When you validate, we know the number of travellers and we can find out if our offer meets the travellers' needs.
- Because it is an issue of solidarity and fairness
It is simply a matter of justice. Why should honest travellers bear the cost of fare dodgers? Every year, STIB/MIVB loses tens of millions of euros due to fare evasion. With that money we could do many other things, such as increase the capacity, the comfort and the security for example.
No valid transport ticket?
You don't have a valid transport ticket or you forgot to validate it? In that case you risk an administrative charge or fine between € 107 and € 408.
- € 107 if you have not validated at the start of your journey and your MOBIB card is loaded with a ticket other than a monthly, quarterly or annual season ticket
- € 214 for a 2nd infraction or more within 24 months after the date of the previous infraction
- € 408 if you use a forged transport ticket and/or a transport ticket/MOBIB card of someone else
- € 10 if you forget or do not validate your MOBIB card loaded with a valid season ticket contract; amount to be paid within 10 business days
- € 107 if you do not pay the above fine within 10 business days
- € 10 if you do not validate a transport ticket other than a season ticket contract at a connection; amount to be paid within 10 business days
- € 107 if you do not pay the above surcharge within 10 business days
